Sometimes it seems like the more connected we become the less we connect. A conundrum to be sure. This series explores the concept of disconnect, starting from the perspective of the disconnects that led to the Flint water crisis. The series was influenced during the pandemic of 2020-21 to consider how other disconnects—racial, political, gender—also cause rifts in our society.
disCONNECT cards
In February of 2020 I started a collaged card series. The series was intended for a summer 2020 exhibit, disCONNECT, that was ultimately cancelled. Using hand-dyed and painted paper and fabric along with found scraps, I collaged 5″x7″ greeting cards. Cards were finished with free-motion machine stitching to add texture and detail. I collaged 8-12 cards every week during Michigan’s “Stay home. Stay safe.” order, from March until July of 2020, creating over 175 cards. If they were pinned on the wall, they would cover an area over 13 feet long and 3.5 feet tall.
disCONNECT art quilts
The quilts in the disCONNECT series explore the themes I began with the cards. I created printed fabrics on a variety of substrates including cotton, linen, and silk. Fabric design techniques include mono-printing, stamping, resist printing, and painting.
