My infrastructure series questions the fragile nature of our everyday infrastructures while also marveling at their endurance. Life is beautifully supported by technology we rarely see: water mains, storm drains, sewer lines, gas lines, electricity. We live, unaware, for decades and even centuries until a crack in the network appears: a hurricane, flooding, toxic algae, poor choices. My work hints at these hidden systems, their longevity, erosion, and remediation.
Monoprinting and painting onto fabric suggests layers of infrastructure, pipes or wires or fading telephone pole markings. Collaging fabrics together builds up images and feelings of these complex and intertwined systems. Using resists as I dye adds nuances of wear and ageing. And finally, watching light play over the surface of a finished quilt, for me, reflects the fragile yet resilient nature of these systems, teetering on the brink of failure one moment, enduring the next.
