Runner – half log cabin scrappy squares

My camera is giving me grief, so I haven’t been able to post anything for a while. Photobooth on the mac just isn’t quite the same as a good digital camera!

This is the sewn table runner that I laid out a while back. Used mainly scraps and experimented with focus and movement and light colors. I cannot decide if I like it, or if it is simply ugly. Sometimes the difference is pretty small! Oh well, I will finish it and see how it comes out.

Wisdom: many laws to one love

As my faith community studies its way through the Bible this year, we considered how the Jewish faith has the Torah, many laws that help guide and craft a thoughtful, good life. Jesus, when he came to earth, turned the law upside down, focusing on one love instead of many laws. My faith draws me to walk in this way of love. Life constantly challenges me to figure out what this means. Living a life filled with love for God, myself, and others is a constant dance, filled with thought-provoking, life-provoking moments.

This quilts many colorful squares represents the Torah, full of life, in many bits. Its drifts down into a growing circle, representing the love and wisdom that Jesus calls us to lean into.

The idea for this sampler quilt came to me last fall, but the design just would not fall together! Finally, I think it is finished.

Art

“Art has no right answer. The best we can hope for is an interesting answer.”

writes Seth Godin in The Icarus Deception, a book I’m currently reading. This phrase is one I want to remember and ponder…..

A thought for the new year – LIVE

As a new year begins, my prayer is that I can live to the full in each moment. I want to embrace the variety and beauty of life. I want to be present in each moment, a living testament to God’s grace. The colors of this collage are lively to reflect the life I want to live. Blessings on this new year. Shalom.

Sandy quilt top

I’ve been enjoying with delight a week off from my normal routine. Finally had a chance to finish this quilt top, and just need a backing fabric so I can complete it!

With love

Staying with our theme of recyled gift wrapping, we had a lot of fun today with tags, brown paper bags, magazine scraps, and Christmas tree twine. Joy to the world!

Peace at Christmas

2012 has been about freeing my creative spirit, partly by going back to basics. I collaged fabric scraps from a vibrant palette along with free motion quilting to create this tree art, embracing the process simply because I enjoy it.
Decided to go free-form this year. Every Christmas card is different!
Taylor’s choir ended the AASO Holiday Pops concert with the song “Let there be peace on earth.” This is my prayer for the new year, and that it can begin within me.

“nest” and creativity

What does it take to be creative? Interestingly, current research (I’m reading “Imagine” right now) says that you need skills, but also need to know when to let go of getting something done to let the creativity of thought break through.

I have been working on a table runner, and had all these scraps. Finally, after piecing two rows, I took an extra square along with the scraps and “let go” and made this nest card. It feels more spontaneous and joyful than the table runner which was trying to be spontaneous!

quilts for giving

When I heard of a group that was collecting quilts for victims of hurricane Sandy, I thought that was something I could do. Turned out to be a bigger something than I expected, but here is one of six pinwheels for the quilt. The fabrics are from my stash, many from the AA Christian School dedication quilt we made. Now that the layout is done, the sewing is going easily, with some time out for Christmas cards in the mix. Joy!

Christmas stocking

Another Christmas stocking to donate … cheery colors, and happy prints designed by Taylor and sewn by me. Thankful for all I have, giving a little back.
